In the northern part of the Moravian Karst, under the villages Sloup and Šošůvka, there lie some of the most entrancing underground areas of the Czech Republic. They are composed of one of the largest complxes of halls, corridors, domes, and underground gorges. Visitors can choose from among several sightseeing tours and the more courageous ones can even try “In the footsteps of Nagel” tour, which will lead you to the lower, commonly inaccessible storeys of the cave.

Experiential route - “In the footsteps of Nagel”

Nearby the picturesque karst village Sloup we can find the Sloup-Šošůvka Caves, known e.g. for the sinking Sloup stream which later “becomes” an underground Punkva river. Sloup is a favourite destination of climbers who strive to conquer the Hřebenáč, India or Europe rock. Rocks such as Father, Mother, and Son, are the landmarks of the whole area.
The tour begins in the entrance portal from where you will get to a small “Nothing” Cave followed by long narrow corridor leading to Eliška’s Cave richly decorated by dripstones of all colours and types. There is also a great acustics and therefore the cave provides a suitable place for concerts. The route then leads to the largest part of the Sloup-Šošůvka Caves - The Old Rocks which start off by Gothic corridor. The corridor ends with 65 meters deep Terraced Gorge; thanks to its bridge the visitors get to enjoy an unconvential view into its depths. Later on a big underground Nagel’s Gorge opens up. It is accessible by two bridges and it is approx. 90 meters deep (measured from the ceiling to the bottom). Then you will then stop in several interesting corridors and the Shack Cave (Kůlna), in which many skeletal remains were discovered, e.g. of cave bear.
If you decide to take the longer tour, you will also see the Šošůvka part of the caves with its Broušek’s fairytale hall and a dipstone called Candlestick. Last but not least - the highlight of the tour - Black gorge, 70 meters deep, reaching to the lower levels of the caves.
After the tour of the caves, we recomment you to visit the local swimming pool, which is well-accessible from Skalní mlýn by the paved road in Pustý žleb valley (cars are restricted it this valley so it almost calls for cycling or a walk).
